East meets west when Tenkara fishing in Pisgah. Tenkara is a traditional form of fishing from Japan. It is similar to traditional western fly fishing, though not the same. If you are a fly fisherman you will find that Tenkara translates fairly easily. Being from Japan, Tenkara fishing was originated to suit the tumbling mountain streams found there. Our free stone streams here in Pisgah are very similar to those streams where Tenkara originated, and are very well suited to this type of fishing. A few of our area streams, with a high gradient and a wide high water foot print, are very suitable to this type of fishing. Tenkara is often billed as a “more simple” form of fly fishing. While there is the lack of a reel I am not so sure I would call it more simple…or even fly fishing. What it is however, is novel, fun, and very effective when employed on the right type of water. If you are an experienced fly fisherman looking for something new and fun, or a back packer/hiker/mountain biker looking for a less gear intensive method of catching a few fish while you are out and about, near rivers and waters, Tenkara may be for you.
